Zed also had a romantic interest in fellow co-worker and friend Mara.
Biography
Beck's Beginning
Zed had worked at Able's garage for much of his life, working on the fastest vehicles within the Grid, but then Clu took control and everything changed. His friend Bodhi was derezzed before his eyes, and although Zed was upset about the loss of his friend, he knew better than to revolt.
Soon after, a new statue of Clu was destroyed by a mysterious program, actually Beck in disguise. In retaliation for this destruction, General Tessler began capturing programs to fight in the games, and Zed and Mara found themselves among those captured. When the Light Rail they were being transported in had almost reached the Game Coliseum it was derailed and crashed. The compartment door was opened and Beck, in disguise again, freed the prisoners.
The Renegade
Later, Mara and Zed went to a dance club where, too embarrassed to dance, Zed sat alone at a table and watched his friend. A program named Perl then sat down by Zed. She tricked him into leaving the club and then showing her around Able's garage. She then made him go into Able's private office. When he showed her the one-of-a-kind ENCOM-786, Perl showed her true colors. She punched Zed from behind and stole the light cycle.
Able later asked Zed where the ENCOM-786 light cycle was, but before Zed could make up a story, Mara realized what had happened and pulled Zed away to help him find it using a tracking device.
After a confrontation with Perl and a criminal gang, Zed grabbed the baton for the ENCOM-786 and, with Mara as a passenger, sped off. He led the criminal gang straight into Paige, and in the confusion he and Mara escaped. This made Zed much more admirable in Mara's eyes, a turnout he undoubtedly enjoyed.
Blackout
Zed had entered in the Argon race with his custom made light cycle. But during the race the renegade warned the last three racers that an explosion was coming. The renegade then took Zed's bike to save another program's life.
Zed escaped and began making a new bike. He was approached by Hopper, Bartik and Paige. They asked him if he would want to be part of a team to hunt down the renegade. He was later at the rally with Tessler cheering for the renegade to get captured.
