For Walt Disney Pictures churning out sequels and turning hit movies into blockbuster franchises is just business as usual. Long before the company unleashed its 3D digital extravaganza, TRON: Legacy, there was little question about the possibility of TRON 3 being made.

News about the animated TRON TV series was released last month and now reports are coming in that the Mouse House will greenlight a followup to TRON: Legacy soon, thus ensuring that the cyber world adventure franchise will continue to live on even longer.

This rumor comes from Ain’t It Cool News, which says that Disney is quite pleased with the returns from the TRON sequel so far. TRON: Legacy has amassed some $300 million at the worldwide box office, which almost covers its estimated $170 million production budget, since half of the ticket sales go to theater patrons. While Disney also spent another $120 million or so advertising the project globally, the company expects to make a bundle off future 3D Blu-ray and regular DVD sales as well.

Merchandising tie-ins are also quite important to Disney and TRON: Legacy has reaped healthy amounts of profit from toy Light Cycles, Identity Discs, etc. – not to mention the film’s Daft Punk score, which continues to rank as a bestseller. Between all the revenue already accumulated by the project and expectations for future profit, there’s little reason to doubt that Disney won’t profit off the TRON sequel at the end of the day.

Like James Cameron’s Avatar sequels, TRON 3 would also be a less expensive undertaking as the sets and costumes used to bring “The Grid’ to life in Legacy have already been constructed, while the necessary 3D camera/motion-capture technology – along with the software for realizing the film’s stylized visual F/X – has improved significantly over the last couple of years. So, really, why shouldn’t Disney move ahead with another TRON movie?

TRON creator/producer Steven Lisberger revealed recently that development of storylines for TRON 3 has already begun and the story broke in mid-2010 that TRON: Legacy screenwriters/executive producers Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz had already been commissioned to write the threequel for Disney. As our Vic Holtreman pointed out in his TRON: Legacy review, the film is effective in its use of 3D and contains some stunning visuals, but ultimately “[it] is all about the eye candy, and not much else.” There’s little reason to suspect that TRON 3 won’t be more of the same, especially if it involves the same individuals that worked on Legacy.

While TRON: Legacy had its share of fun moments (like the Light Cycle race), the Identity Disc duels, or the End of Line Club sequence, it was often dragged down by scenes of characters delivering extraneous amounts of exposition to help flesh out and develop the history of the TRON universe. The sequel’s plot was overall rather muddled and thin, and, in my opinion, left us with little reason to want to see the series continue in TRON 3 – other than the fact that a second sequel would mean more snazzy 3D visuals.

Disney seems determined to press on with the TRON franchise and, from a financial point of view, it’s hard to argue that they shouldn’t. So, since TRON 3 now looks to be all but inevitable, how can the filmmakers improve on TRON: Legacy (besides coming up with a more comprehensible plot, that is)?

In honor to Tron's release next week, a helper from Wikia has offered me to publish a link of our site to some news sources, so we can get more traffic, and expand our user base. In order to achieve that, we need to write a little blurb about why you love the wiki, or why it's so important to you... just a couple of thoughts. We need to show those news sources why this is the best place to go for Tron information, and to show that we have some great users.

This will only take about 2 minutes of your time, and it will help to make the wiki grow, a lot. Even if you're a visitor, or you don't know a lot about Tron, you can still help us by giving us some ideas to grow and imrpove this encyclopedia. Also, please let me know if you think of anything we can use to attract the press. Thanks in advance to everyone.

It’s Tron Tuesday and that means Walt Disney Pictures has released new material promoting their upcoming tentpole pic, Tron Legacy. This week, it comes in the form of a snazzy music video/trailer.

Electronic musical duo Daft Punk’s original score for the Tron sequel enhances the exciting mood of this action-packed preview, which includes brief snippets of not-yet-seen film footage.

Props to Disney far excellent job of adding fuel to the fan-anticipation fire for Tron Legacy. The throwback Tron Legacy poster is both stylish and pays homage to the one-sheet for the original Tron, which has a solid cult following of its own. Marvel’s Tron-inspired makeover of its cherished superheroes is both creative and cool looking -- and Disney still has its Tron Legacy preview screenings to help spread the word about the big-budget, 3D cyber world adventure.

The new Tron Legacy music vid -- which is set to a sample of Daft Punk’s “Derezzed” theme from the film’s soundtrack -- contains several familiar bits of lightcycle races and cyberdisc duels that appeared in previous Tron Legacy trailers. It also features new footage of Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund) just after he arrives in Tron and offers a look at Michael Sheen (doing his best David Bowie impersonation) as Castor -- along with Daft Punk’s cameo in the movie.

Check out the Tron Legacy “Derezzed” preview HERE.

Daft Punk’s techno score for Tron Legacy is pretty catchy and seems to fit the look and pace of the film like a glove so far. The visual FX look by and large very impressive and the Tron landscape should be pretty awesome on the big screen -- especially in 3D IMAX.

Clu 2.0 (a.k.a. young CGI Jeff Bridges) doesn’t look as good (i.e. fake), but we get the feeling that, like the Na’vi from Avatar, as a digital creation he’ll benefit from being seen on, well, a screen that’s larger than a computer laptop.

No one is expecting Tron Legacy to do Avatar-sized business at the box office, but Disney is clearly banking on the film being a hit when it arrives this upcoming holiday season. Moviegoers’ interest in 3D has waned a bit, especially now that there have been a handful of films released that were given the subpar post-production conversion treatment, but the new Tron adventure was designed for, and clearly will look stellar in, the third dimension. It should be one cinematic venture that’s actually worth the more expensive price of a ticket.

Daft Punk’s Tron Legacy soundtrack will be released on December 7th, 2010. Tron Legacy arrives in theaters a week later and will be shown in the 2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D format.

Tron Legacy is one of the most anticipated movies of the year, which is pretty surprising considering the massive amount of marketing material that Disney has put out for the film.

Between all of the trailers and posters, you would think that moviegoers might be getting over-stimulated. Instead, each new item that comes out only gets people more excited.

Take this new one-sheet for example. Not only does it look awesome on its own, but it’s also a throwback to a poster for the original Tron (hat tip to io9 for putting the two side-by-side). That’s not just cool, it’s cool on top of cool. In Tron terms, it’s like riding a light cycle while you’re having a disc battle.

Anyway, you can check out the new poster (via Yahoo) below, along with the side-by-side comparison to the original.

It’s kind of a surprise that Disney waited so long to put out a new take on the original poster, but the result is clearly a success. Tron Legacy was one of the biggest hits at this year’s San Diego Comic Con, and it’s no wonder why. The movie has some of the best looking 3D we’ve seen yet, not to mention a top-notch cast and a killer soundtrack.

There’s been some grumbling in the fanboy community about the quality of the CGI used to make Clu 2.0, aka the younger version of Jeff Bridges’ character, but I’m comfortable that director Joseph Kosinski has done everything in his power to make those sequences work. When you consider that Kosinski and his team have been at work on this film for over three years, you have to give them the benefit of the doubt.

Tron Legacy comes out December 17th 2010. That’s pretty great timing, because if you think about it, it’s like Disney is giving nerds across America a totally awesome Christmas present.

Hello, as many of you already know, Wikia is doing some major changes to their layout. Since this Wednesday, October 6, the change will affect both the appearance and how things are done here. The change is compulsory for all wikis because it is not simply a new skin option, it’s going to be an upgraded version of Wikia (the Wikia system's software is going from MediaWiki 1.15 to 1.16, which is apparently a bigger deal than it sounds like). Wikia does not want to waste resources working on an outdated version of the software, hence the update being mandatory.
Check out "Experience the new Wikia" for a look at some wikis using the new look, FAQ and the Transition guide.

Discontinued features

The widget dashboard and all widgets are to be discontinued as they were deemed to be underused.

"Report a Problem" links will also be discontinued with the new skin as they were not used as intended.

"Email a user" link is gone.

Page ratings are gone.

New features

New, customizable toolbar that is anchored at the bottom of the screen (Watch the demo video to see how it works.) You will need to learn to use this. (requires JavaScript)

New tool for customizing the colour scheme/theme, including default themes.

Other changes

The new look uses a fixed width layout, we are not permitted to change, which might influence the layout of articles quite a bit.

Wiki logo is replaced with "Wordmark", which admins can customize by adjusting the text & color, or by uploading an image in the theme designer.

Site notice is no longer on every page. It is now located in the Community Corner and users will receive a notification bubble each time it is updated.

The wiki navigation that is now on the left sidebar, is moving to the top of the screen. It will have 4 drop down menus, with 7 links each. This is substantially less than we currently have. (requires JavaScript)

"My Home" becomes "Wiki Activity" and contains a link to recent changes

There is a new sidebar area on the right that takes about 1/3 of each page's width, where the recent activity and other "modules" will sit. More "modules" are being developed for it, but there are currently no plans for user-developed modules.

Moved the most recent editor’s name from the bottom of the page to the top, added an avatar, and a new mini-history dropdown menu, which contains the link to the full history. (Supposed to make it more obvious to new users that anyone can edit a wiki.) (requires JavaScript)

Two of the categories are listed at top as well the full list at the bottom. Apparently the two chosen will be the categories containing the most pages. There is a blacklist to keep out typical maintenance categories, but it is not wiki specific (atm).

Edit and talk buttons will be used instead of written links.

The name of the user who uploaded a picture will be listed underneath the image caption on articles.

The "Terms of Use" are changed so that we will only have very limited options on what we may change on the new layout that is visible to all users.

When/how will this change happen?
(copy/paste from Wikia staff blog. Check there for any updates)

October 6, 2010

The new look will continue to be default for logged-out users on the beta wikis

All logged in users will be able to “switch on” the new look for themselves on any wiki they visit.

All new wikis created will automatically use the new look.

Every wiki in the Wikia Lifestyle Hub will showcase the new look.

October 20, 2010 *

All users will see the new look on every wiki.

Logged in users will have the temporary option of viewing and editing wikis in Monaco.

November 3, 2010

The option to use Monaco will be removed.

* Please note that this timeline does not include non-English wikis, which will require translation. We will announce the international transition plan in the coming weeks.
