Tank

Vehicle Type: Tracked armoured combat vehicle
Max. Speed: unknown
Occupants : 1 to 3 programs
Designer: Syd Mead
Notable users: Clu, Military Tank Programs
The interior of the tank was a complex set with a rotating chiar and cockpit. It was one of the few sets in the movie where camera movement was allowed to be shot, as the background was very simplistic to animate.

The Tank is one of many vehicles in the computer world. The tank is mainly used by military-security programs and hacker programs. Its main weapon (if not its only weapon) is a large cannon mounted on top of the tank that can rotate 360°. Each tank holds one operator who acts as driver, gun operator, and radioman. Normally however, 3 programs are needed to operate a tank (especially for military operations), however 1 operator is enough, espescially for hacking purposes.

Tanks are not very fast, as lightcycles can normally outrun them. However, lightcycles - and even the giant recognizers - cannot withstand the powerful energy projectile that tanks fire at enemies.

To tell the difference between hack tanks and military tanks, is to check the color of the tread (aka continuous track) of the tank. Military tanks are usually green, while hackers are orange-yellow. Also, depending on what circuitry color the program has will probably determine what color tread the tank will have.

Although tanks have been known to fire at objects at a vertical axis (this is proven in Tron through several Point-of-View shots) it has never been shown how the turret is capable of being raised upwards.

In the video game Tron 2.0, the tanks make a brief appearance as a foil to the main protagonist, Jet Bradley. The tanks shoot at Jet while he attempts to activate a platform that will help him escape from them. The tanks are considered "read-only," computer jargon meaning that they can not be "derezzed" (a franchise term meaning "killed" or "destroyed"). Unlike the lightcycles which the player eventually gets to operate by driving them, there is no opportunity in the game to operate a tank.
