Beck's Beginning is the premiere episode of TRON: Uprising.
Plot Synopsis
Beck works at Able's garage with his friends Bodhi, Zed, and Mara. He enjoys his job, but not as much as the disc games he and his friends play on their time off.
As the group of friends enjoy some recreational time together in a friendly disc game, a military battalion led by General Tesler arrives and takes over their playing field. Tesler informs the people of Argon City that the city is now under occupation. When a giant statue of Clu is dropped in the center of the game field, Bodhi protests, and, to Beck’s horror, is derezzed by a guard. Deciding to fight back against the Occupation, Beck uses Bodhi's recoding tool on his disc, modifying his light suit to look similar to Tron's. He then scales the statue, removes its head, and drops a light grenade inside the hollow frame to destroy it.
A guard reports the statue’s destruction to Tesler, along with the observation that the culprit looked like Tron. Clu enters and denies this claim, saying that Tron is dead. Tesler responds by sending his second-in-command, Paige, to find the masked renegade.
Beck dispatches two of the Black Guard that pursued him after the statue’s destruction, but is confronted by Paige, resulting in a protracted fight. Boarding a light copter, Beck overpowers its pilot, but damages the flight controls in the process. He is then forced to abandon the craft to Paige and bails out over the Outlands.
Repairing an abandoned light crawler, Beck heads for home, but finds himself pursued by a masked program with red circuits. Unable to escape, he is soon overpowered and captured. He then awakens to discover that he is being held captive in a large chamber; his captor, still masked, approaches to interrogate him. The program challenges Beck's activities; Beck is defiant, assuming that his captor is loyal to Clu, and secretly starts using the recoder to disable his bindings. Once free, he grabs his disc and lunges at the stranger, who was anticipating this and easily dodges Beck’s attack. Their verbal exchange continues throughout the fight, and when Beck expresses determination to fight Clu no matter what it takes, the stranger unmasks and reveals himself to be Tron, saying that Beck was right about one thing: “I’m not dead.”
Tron explains how he was programmed to defend the Grid, and how he was betrayed by Clu. He shows Beck the horrific injuries that prevent him from taking back the Grid now, and tries to convince Beck to join him and become the next Tron in a fight against the Occupation, but Beck, faced with the Grid's legendary hero, is consumed with self-doubt. Despite Tron's entreaties, Beck declines the offer and returns to Argon City.
Back the garage, Beck heads downstairs and is greeted by Paige and a troop of guards, who confront the garage workers with a recording of the Renegade's activities. Paige informs them that Tesler has brought the Games to Argon and that until the imposter is turned in, they will be populated by “volunteers" rounded up from the city.
Beck and his friends discuss the Renegade the next day at work; Mara approves of the masked program's activities, but Zed believes sedition will just cause trouble. Able pulls Beck aside momentarily to warn him against making waves in the new, dangerous conditions, but when they step out of Able's office they are horrified to see Tesler already rounding up programs -- Zed and Mara among them -- for the Games. Despite Able's warning, Beck secretly dons his Tron disguise again and pursues the light rail transporting his captive friends to the Coliseum. Jumping onto the train, he encounters a Black Guard, who viciously defends the train. Beck gains the upper hand and appears ready to derez the Guardsman, but instead detaches the last car from the train and is left behind with it, leaving the rapidly disappearing soldier confused at why he was spared. The car Beck detached turns out to be empty, and he activates his lightcycle to chase the train again; getting ahead of it, he breaks the light beam's supports and causes it to crash. The Black Guard takes him by surprise as he searches for his friends, but shows him to the right car in exchange for saving his life, and the two free the prisoners and watch them escape. However, General Tesler arrives, derezzes the Guard for aiding the Renegade, and attacks Beck with his enhanced extendable gauntlets, telling him that he'll never be able to save everybody. Beck is able to cut off Tesler's gauntlets and throw him into a light rail beam, which carries the furious general off at high speed; Tesler is eventually rescued by Paige.
Beck returns to Tron’s hideout in the Outlands and tells him that he is ready to undergo training to become the next Tron. Tron proclaims that he isn’t ready, but he will be. Tron then removes his identity disc and separates it into two halves, exchanging one for half of Beck's disc. Beck combines the white half with his black half and puts the disc on; while Tron's light suit turns black, as Beck's had been, Beck now acquires the white outfit Tron had worn in the old days. His new mentor completes the exchange with the words, “Come, we have a lot of work to do... Tron.”
