TRON: Uprising S01E01 Beck's Beginning

“Hidden away inside a computer, exists another world. Its creator designed it for games, but it became so much more. He called it The Grid, a digital utopia filled with infinite possibilities. He built a digital copy of himself named Clu, to create the perfect system. And he relied on the hero, Tron, to keep it free for all programs who lived there. But in his thirst for power, Clu betrayed his creator. Tron fought back, but Clu was too powerful and left him for dead. Clu dispatched his armies and seized absolute control. Now, in a far off corner of the Grid, a young program decides Clu must be stopped. His name is Beck. Could he be the next Tron?”

Beck is interrogated

Beck is a mechanic in a black Tron like guise being interrogated by a masked Black Guard by the name of Rinzler. Beck refuses to talk. Rinzler decides to use Beck’s identity disc to see for himself.

Beck works at a repair shop, Able’s garage, with his friends Bodhi, Zed, and Mara. Bodhi gives Beck a special device for repairs, a recoder. Beck enjoys his job, but not as much as the disc games he and his friends would play. A battalion of Clu’s forces arrive lead by General Tessler who informs the people of Argon that they will be occupying the city. A giant statue of Clu is dropped in the center of the game field and a Guard says that they can no longer use the field. Bodhi protests and is derezzed by the Guard, much to Beck’s horror and anger. Beck decides to fight back. During the night, Beck uses his recoder on his disc to modify his light suit to look similar to Tron’s. Beck goes to the top of the statue (with his helmet on to conceal his true identity) and uses his disc to remove the head and drops a light grenade into the statue, causing its destruction. The guards see him escape on his light cycle and notice that he looks like Tron. A Guard reports to Tessler who demands to know who it was. The Guard says that it looked like Tron. Clu enters saying that Tron is dead, he killed him himself. Tessler sends Paige (a female program and his second in command) to find “Tron”. Once Beck dispatches the two Black Guards that pursued him, he is confronted by Paige and they get into a small fight. Beck jumps onto a light copter and takes out the Guard, but damages the flight controls. He is able to use his recoder to repair the controls and is then pinned by Paige who had also jumped on. He turns the tables and pins her as the back propeller is damaged and he jumps off. Beck uses a chute to somewhat slow his landing and ends up in the Outlands. He arrives at a junkyard and repairs a light runner to return to Argon. But he is pursued by Rinzler and subdued with a light taser.

Rinzler informs Beck that his actions make him an enemy of the state and throws Beck’s disc to the floor. Beck says that the state is the enemy and secretly starts using his decoder to disable his bindings. Rinzler asks why he wants people to believe that Tron is alive. Beck says that maybe he is and he knows that if others believe it could inspire a revolution. Once free of his binds he grabs his disc and lunges at Rinzler, who was anticipating this and dodges Beck’s attacks. Rinzler then knocks Becks disc to the ground and continues to block and dodge Becks punches. Beck: “I won’t stop fighting.” “Even if it means you’ll be derezzed right now?” Rinzler says as he holds his disc to Becks neck. “If it means others will take up my cause, then so be it.” Says Beck as he brings his recovered disc to Rinzler’s neck. Beck orders Rinzler to let him out, which Rinzler refuses, saying that Beck won’t hurt him; Beck asks what makes him so sure. Rinzler retracts his helmet as he says that Beck was right about one thing. Rinzler’s light suit and disk change to reveal that he is actually Tron. “I’m not dead.” Beck is amazed and says that Tron is here to help. Tron corrects him by saying that he actually needs help and Beck may be just what he is looking for. Beck asks what he is looking for. “The next Tron.”

Tron tells Beck that there is a war raging that most programs aren’t even aware of. Clu has taken over all the cities on the Grid. And now thanks to Beck, they can bring the fight to him. Beck says that he is just a mechanic and the statue was a onetime thing. He asks Tron why he doesn’t fight back since he was the one programmed

to defend the Grid. Tron says he can’t and steps into a green ray that shows that he is severely scarred thanks to Clu. He says that he needs Beck to carry on his name, to show everyone that as long as Tron lives there is still hope. Beck says that he isn’t special and he is just like everyone else. Tron asks if he truly believes that, to which Beck responds with yes. “Then the war is already lost.”

Beck makes his way back to Argon and Able’s garage. Able tells Beck that something is happening and Beck heads downstairs. A small group of Guards and Paige are in the garage and show the workers a recording of Beck as Tron and tell them to turn him in if they know who he is. “Tron is dubbed The Renegade since the army doesn’t believe him to actually be Tron. Paige then informs them that the games will be coming to Argon and until the “imposter” is turned in, “volunteers” for the games will be round up. Paige then notices Beck about to use a recoder on a light cycle and asks where he got it. Able tells her that he got it from the cabinet where they keep their tools and shows her the cabinet with the recoders. Paige leaves no longer suspecting Beck. Mara supports the Renegade believing that he is helping the people of Argon and thinks that he could be Tron. But Zed only sees the Renegade as a nuisance for causing problems like the games. The next day Beck is horrified to see Tessler rounding up programs for the games, including his friends. Beck dons his black Tron guise and pursues the light rail with his captive friends. He jumps onto the rail and fights a Black Guard who retracts his helmet when a tube is severed. Beck gains the upper hand and appears ready to derezz the Guard but instead breaks the connection of the last car. The confused Guard asks why he spared him. Beck opens the car only to see that it is empty and activates his light cycle to catch up with the rail. Beck gets ahead of the rail and breaks the light beam causing the rail to crash but leaves the captive programs uninjured. The Guard Beck spared then helps him find his friend to express gratitude for being spared. The programs escape and the Guard is derezzed by Tessler for helping the Renegade. Tessler and Beck fight and Beck is able to throw Tessler into a rail light beam sending Tessler off at high speed. An angry Tessler is picked up by Paige in a copter.

Beck returns to Tron’s hideout in the Outlands and agrees to undergo training to become the next Tron saying he is ready. Tron say he isn’t ready, but he will be. Tron then removes his disc and separates it into two halves, one white and one black, which causes his light suit to change black.

Tron then gives the white half to Beck who gives Tron half of his disc. Beck combines the white half with his black half and puts the disc on, giving him Tron’s light suit. Tron: “Come, we have a lot of work to do, Tron.”
