Richard Mackey was the chairman of ENCOM in 2010.

History[]

After the disappearance of Kevin Flynn, ENCOM's board seized control of the company from Alan Bradley, Flynn's partner and close friend. Richard Mackey took over as the new chairman, and he and the rest of the board eliminated the idea of providing their operating system to the public for free.

Richard was present at the late-night board meeting in December 2010 for the launch of ENCOM OS-12. He spoke proudly of ENCOM's financial achievements over the past year, brushing off Alan's inquiry into the operating system's new features with a wisecrack that they had just added a number "twelve on the box". He also made a point of congratulating Edward Dillinger, Jr. in a manner that deliberately neglected the achievements of ENCOM's errant CEO, Kevin Flynn.

The meeting was disrupted, however, when Kevin's son Sam infiltrated ENCOM Tower and uploaded ENCOM OS-12 online for free. Richard became aware of the intrusion when his presentation was replaced with a looped video clip of Sam's dog Marv, having been uploaded into ENCOM's servers as a prank to supplement the software hack. Richard was infuriated by this and tried to shut it down until he was told to relax by Dillinger, who had been able to trace the problem and kill the program. Richard angrily questioned Dillinger as to how he could relax when their operating system was now available for free, to which Dillinger told him to simply announce it to the public as a "generous gift" from ENCOM. Still irate about what had just happened, Richard proceeded to throw his remote across the table.[1]

Richard was ultimately fired from his position after Sam seized control of ENCOM later that month and named Alan as the new chairman.[2]
