A Recognizer (also known as a Reco by both programs and Users; Ram also called them Demons) was a hovering vehicle used by the MCP's army to capture conscripts and programs. It was extremely big and made an unique ominous sound when hovering. It captured programs by rotating its "legs" to make a single limb and literally "stomp" on the program, however this doesn't harm the program but just simply captures it. What happens exactly right after a program gets "stomped" on by a recognizer is currently unknown.
During his escape from the Game Grid, Flynn came across a destroyed recognizer and was, through his status as a user, able to bring it back to life. Flynn was able to clumsily pilot the recognizer to the main city of tron where he crashed it. He remarked that it only goes straight.
In Tron 2.0: Killer App (GBA), recognizers are fitted with a cannon, similar to the cannon of a tank. The position of the cannon on the recognizers body is on its shoulder. In Tron, Flynn stumbles upon what he thought was rubble, but turned out to be a recognizer cockpit. With his User powers, Flynn reactivated the recognizer and it automatically reassembled. The control are, as Flynn pointed out to Ram, similar to arcade controllers. The recognizer can be flown by just 1 operator, although most carry 2, a driver and radar/radio operator. The total capacity is 1 driver, 1 radar operator, 1 radio operator, and a commander.

[edit] Trivia
- The Recognizer has a resemblance to Maximilian from the film also made by Disney a few years earlier before Tron, The Black Hole. This resemblance is probably a complete coincidence.
- The memorable sound of the Recognizers was created by sound designer Frank Serafine by simply modifying the "Helicopter" preset on the Prophet-5 synthesizer. The recognizer sound can be recreated on any synthesizer by adding a very fast LFO sine wave, to give it that helicopter sound.
