Derez (short for Deresolution) is a term used to describe someone or something disappearing or dissolving, essentially resulting in deletion. It is a program's equivalent of death. The opposite of derez is resolution, a program's equivalent of birth, or loading/starting a program in the system; and reresolution, or rebirth.
Etymology
The word is derived from deresolve, which is usually said when conscripts receive their identity disc:
- "If you lose your disc, or fail to follow commands, you will be subject to immediate deresolution."
- ―Sark[src]
Usage
The word can be used as either a transitive or intransitive verb. For example, the quote:
- "Is he derezzing?"
- ―Yori[src]
shows the word when used as an intransitive verb.
Programs
TRON
When a program is derezzed in TRON, they fall to the ground, their lights fade and they disappear without a trace. Sometimes, they are enveloped in a red or yellow glow before they disappear. If they slowly derezz from a grievous injury, their circuitry may pulse slowly until it fades out.
TRON: Legacy
When a program is derezzed in TRON: Legacy, they shatter into cubes or pixels, and then spread on the ground like broken glass. The shattering of fast-moving programs subjected to high impact collisions has an appearance similar to a liquid splash when they impact. The pixel-like cubes appear to remain on the Grid after deresolution.
Users
If the digitization hardware is available, should a user derez in the Game Grid, he or she will be simply returned to the real world. However if the digitization hardware or software is damaged or missing, the user will die.
