Castor, also known to some programs as Zuse, is a flamboyant and vivacious program that owns and operates the End of Line Club, a nightclub located on top of the tallest tower in Tron City.[2][3]

History[]

Early past[]

Disparate accounts of Castor's origin exist. He was reputedly designed and created by Kevin Flynn in TC30 as an interpreter but quickly and naturally exceeded his original directives. Unconfirmed conflicting reports describe his origin as a "low-priority actuarial algorithm illegally co-opted identity of the obsolete protocol. More investigation required for verification."[4]

At an unknown point of time, Zuse became the owner of the End of Line Club,[5] the only ISO safe haven within Tron City.[6] Zuse was briefly seen dancing in said club while Tron and the bartender of the club, Shaddix, conversed with each other.[7]

1989[]

Zuse speaking to Quorra

Zuse was known to have a relationship with with fellow ISO, Quorra. After the Coup against Kevin Flynn, Quorra and the System Monitor, Anon, went to the End of Line Club to obtain Zuse's help. Zuse greeted Quorra before she asked for help from Zuse in a much serious tone. An attitude that Zuse tried to enlighten by offering a drink, to which he was going to announce libations for the programs within the club until he saw Anon. Quorra assured Castor that Anon was her ally before informing Zuse that Clu had taken over the Grid, confusing him as to how Kevin Flynn would allow Clu to do so until Quorra told him both Flynn and Tron were murdered by Clu himself. Zuse gave Quorra access to a Solar Sailer, recommending her to take a ride to Arjia City in order to find Radia, who'd spread word of Clu's betrayal faster than any other ISO fraction. There after, a giant ship came and destroyed the End of Line Club, the destruction of the Club being seen as a declaration of war on the ISOs that would be known as the Purge.[6]

Zuse was involved in the Purge, fighting alongside the Isomorphic Algorithms. After the Purge, he found a need to reinvent himself for self-protection, thus adopting the new persona of Castor.[8]

When Gem guided Sam Flynn to him at the End of Line Club where Castor was posing as a middle man between those who are seeking Zuse and Zuse himself. Knowing full well of Sam's connection to his father, he eventually revealed himself as Zuse and agreed to help Sam make his exit. This meeting was interrupted when a squad of Black Guards raided the club, revealing Castor's duplicitous connection with Clu. Kevin and Quorra intervened and thus changed the tide of battle, prompting Castor to withdraw to safety. As the trio escaped however, a surviving Black Guard snatched the Identity Disc from Kevin's back, but was himself beaten when Castor blew a hole through him with his cane. Castor triumphantly retrieved the disc that was his prize all along.

In the aftermath of the battle, Clu paid a visit to the End of Line Club to retrieve Kevin's disc from Castor. The deal was to give Castor complete control of Tron City in exchange for Kevin's identity disc. Clu evidently had no intention of holding up his end of the bargain and simply took the disc, his Black Guards planting Light Grenades on the walls as they left. Castor was left standing speechless - the master of negotiations and the self-proclaimed player of "all the angles" had himself been played. A short time later, the End of Line Club exploded by the guardsmen's explosives, the explosion apparently Derezzed both Castor and Gem.[9]

Other appearances[]

TRON: Legacy Graphic Novel[]

Castor appears in the comic adaptation of TRON: Legacy, his role in the comic is primarily the same as it is in the film.

General information[]

Skills and Traits[]

As a ruse, Castor acts as an independent program who is secretary to Zuse, determining who gets to see him. In reality Castor is none other than Zuse himself, meaning he can pull a lot of weight in the political world of the Tron system. He also has skills in getting programs into places by modifying their discs to grant them access to restricted areas and functions, as seen when he gives Quorra the ability to control the Solar Sailer in TRON: Evolution.

Castor is known for his flamboyant, social, outgoing personality. He was in a nonchalant and joking mood when consulting Bartik's proposal on usurping Clu. During the Purge, he had faith in the users, but he had abandoned these views by the time Sam was sent to the Grid.

Castor carries a cane packed with a hidden energy weapon. He notably used this weapon to fire a machine gun-like blast to derez a Black Guard, and also fires it randomly around the club during the battle.

Castor concept Art

Conceptualization[]

For Castor's physical appearance, Micheal Sheen, the actor of Castor in TRON: Legacy, decided to go for a "70s British Rockstar look."[10] Due to his view on computer programs,[11] as well as being intrigued by the idea of a character who reinvented themselves in order to survive, similar to that of a chameleon,[12] Micheal Sheen took inspiration from one of David Bowie's characters, Ziggy Stardust,[13] as well as other Glam Rock figures.[14] According to Phil Saunders, a concept artist for TRON: Legacy, Castor was going to be more robotic in appearance. Having a body reminiscent of molded plastic, braided cables, interchangeable faces that were going to be metaphors for him being "two-faced". Due to budget decisions however, this concept of Zuse was scrapped from the final version of the film.[15]

Trivia[]

CastorScarface1

Castor fires his can in a manner similar to Tony Montana.

  • For the role, Michael Sheen had to wear light blue contacts.
  • The name Zuse is possibly either a reference to the Zuse Z3, which was one of the first fully functional programmable computers, or its inventor: Konrad Zuse.
  • In the End of Line attack scene, Castor uses his cane weapon as a machine gun, standing atop a staircase, similar to Tony Montana in the 1983 film Scarface.
    • In both films, the person shooting it holds it at their waist instead of on their shoulders.
    • In both films, both are shooting as a result of an invasion in their business or home; In Scarface, Tony Montana uses an M16 assault rifle to fend off his former boss, Sosa's hitmen. In this movie, he uses it with an attempt to kill, while in TRON: Legacy, Castor fires it merely as a way of showboating and manages to derez a black guard.
