Basics are user-created programs with clearly defined directives for operation or functions. They operate within a strictly regimented class system, determined by priority ranking within it. With some exceptions, they are not able to adapt or change beyond boundaries set by their user-issued directives.

The most prominent basic in the series is Tron. Other notable individuals include Castor and Ram. Beck is a main protagonist of the TRON: Uprising television series, and Anon is the central figure in the game, TRON: Evolution.
